Do You Need Math To Win In Tennis Matches

Use tennis statistics to win!

Some will say its just a bunch of numbers that happen randomly from match to match with no effect on my tennis. Sure, you could think the same way but, you would be missing one of the greatest tools that can help you improve your tennis game immensely.

The key is to make the stats work for you.

What do you need to do?

Focus on one part of your game only. For example unforced errors. Have your coach or a friend chart the statistics of a full match 2 or 3 sets (practice or tournament play).

Whatever the result, if you are playing an opponent of identical level as yours, you will have a number and this number looked at in the overall context of the match can tell you if it was a determining factor or not in your win or loss.

Once that is determined the kind of consistency level you are at will also be evident to you as well as the need to work intensively on it or not.

This is a simple step to improvement but an important one, because the ability to be consistent on any shot is key to playing higher level competitive tennis. The quicker you find the culprit, be it the forehand or backhand the faster you will be on your way to becoming a better player.

Of course this involves enormous complexities and a tennis coach must be your guide. Take for example, you find out your forehand is costing you matches. Your first reaction may be, well I will hit thousands of forehands and I will solve the problem. Not necessarily!

Several of the reasons why you are missing your forehand could be among the following and the list is non exhaustive:

– Poor timing.

– Improper back swing (too wide or too short).

– Extreme grip or wrong grip.

– Footwork or lack of footwork.

– Lack of fitness (tire too early in the matches and start making mistakes independent of proper stroke production).

– Over-hitting the ball or rushing to hit winners too early.

And the list of reasons to miss forehands, backhands or any other shot in tennis is endless. That is why the professional, knowledgeable and experienced eye of a good coach is fundamental to help you determine the right way for you to use stats to work on your game.

Going back to how you can see why you are faring well or not against other players through reading your stats, I will give you an example I extrapolated from the ATP and the professional tennis players; in 2006 I saved some statistics from the ATP on the best 10 players.

Then in 2008 I compared two of those players, Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal and the results were startling to say the least! Right there in black and white, Roger Federer’s demise as the N1 in the world was clear.

To give you an idea through a single statistic (Aces), from November 2006 to June 2008, Roger Federer went from N 3 in service Aces to N 7 while at the same time Rafael Nadal went from N 48 to N 1. Staggering improvement on Nadal’s part!

You may say, but it is just the serve! Yes, but the serve is one of the most important strokes to build victories in tennis, whether you are a baseliner or an aggressive attacker, the quality of your serve can be the difference between winning and losing.

In Roger Federers case it was a lot more then the serve that fell apart during the first part of the year. In some stats he fell from N1 to 15 and in 10 statistics with the exception of one or two, he saw a substantial drop in all of them. I invite you to read the full article at my website.

Anyway here you have a good starter for improving your game of tennis. Statistics can help you in every area of your tennis, this meaning that stats are clinical and unforgiving, if your returns are letting you down it will be there in black and white for you or your coach to see.

The same applies for forehands, backhands, volleys and even your mental game only if you are able to tie the specific moments when things happened in the course of a tennis match.

Good coaches and smart players use tennis statistics all the time to eliminate potential weaknesses, find a soft spot in an opponent’s game, and to improve any part of your game be it technical or mental you can address it immediately!

You can do the same and become a better player or even the player you always dreamed to be. Do not wait, get yourself a stats form or a software like the one I promote on my website and start winning matches against players youve lost to in the past!

Wishing you a great start and an even better ending for this season!

A Short History Of Wimbledon Tennis

The Wimbledon Championships

The club itself was founded in 1868, when it was known as the All England Croquet Club. It wasn’t until 1876 when the game of lawn tennis was invented that it became one of the activities at the club. A year later the club decided to change its name to the All England Croquet and Lawn Tennis Club, and at the same time decided to celebrate their new name with the inaugural Wimbledon Championship. The Gentleman’s Singles was the only event held, and around 200 spectators paid one shilling to get into the All England Club and watch the final, which was won by Spencer Gore.

For future championships several other courts were arranged around one main court where more important games were staged, hence the name Centre Court. When the club moved to a new location in 1922 they decided to keep the name for their new main court, even though it is no longer an accurate description of its location. However during the 80s more courts were built on the opposite side of the court to make its name more appropriate.

In 1822, the club had become so synonymous with the game of lawn tennis that the croquet in the name was dropped, until it was restored for sentimental reasons in 1899. However, when it was restored it was made the latter part of the name, making it the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club, which it is still known as today. The club expanded in 1884 with the addition of Ladies’ Singles, Ladies’ Doubles, and Men’s Doubles. Mixed Doubles was eventually added in 1913. Before what is known as the open era started in 1968 only top ranked amateurs played in the championship, before the game went professional.

More recently, a building plan has been completed to keep Wimbledon as one of the top sporting locations. The first step of the plan was completed in 1997 when a new Court No. 1 was build along with two extra courts and a broadcast centre. In 2009 the second stage was completed with the removal of the old No. 1 court and the construction of the Millennium Building with facilities for players and press. Extensions were also made on Centre Court with over 700 seats installed, along with improvements to Wimbledon hospitality. The final stage of improvements were completed in 2011 with the construction of an entrance building, museum and ticket office among other things. Also in 2009 a retractable roof was built on Centre Court, allowing play to continue during poor weather and at night.

The Centre Court and Court No. 1 are normally only used for two weeks a year during the Wimbledon Championships, however they can be used for a third week if Wimbledon overruns because of weather issues. The show courts were also used during the 2012 London Olympic Games. One of the courts can also be used for home Great Britain games during the Davis Cup. The rest of the smaller courts are used throughout the year for events hosted by the All England Club.

Wimbledon now remains the only Grand Slam tournament that is played on grass. The Centre Court has a capacity of 15,000 and houses the Royal Box on the south side, where the Royal Family and other special guests can watch the action unfold. The improvements made to Court No. 1 means that it now can hold 11,000, and it’s expected that in the future the All England Club will build a retractable roof for it.

Teach Tennis At Summer Camp

Located in a picturesque setting, surrounded by lush woods and pine trees, was my office for the summer the tennis courts. The clear blue sky, the warmth of the sun on your back, the trees rustling in the wind creating a light breeze made it very easy to forget that you are actually here to do a job. In any other situation at home, I would be daunted by the idea of trying to control and teach a group of thirteen hyped up teenage boys but at camp, this was a fun, rewarding and a somewhat challenging experience.

At my camp there were five other tennis counsellors which made the classes easier to handle as I would normally be working with at least one other tennis counsellor, if not two. We would start each lesson with a fun and different warm-up exercise every day and then divide the kids up into groups depending on their ability. Normally, then wed go through some drills to practice a specific skill for that day. During the week-long staff orientation before the campers arrived, we made our own lesson plans, just to help us give a general idea on what we were going to teach to what ability so you were never stuck on what to do. Although, you do just tend to get caught up in the excitement and the overwhelming enthusiasm of the campers that you really just end up using your lesson plans as a guide and reference. I couldnt believe how fast the lessons went (my camp was 50 minutes each lesson but this may vary) so was always surprised when the bell went for the end of the lesson. As long as the campers have had enough time to play a game before the end, then theyll be happy- Fruit Salad and King of the Court seemed to be the favourites!

I was so pleased to hear that I was going to camp as a Tennis Counsellor and doing something that I loved in America and getting paid for it! Of course, no one goes to camp to earn the money but it is just nice to have to spend on your travels after camp. Besides, the joy and fulfilment on a campers face when theyve finally managed to master the complicated serve action is priceless. Although I was there to teach tennis, you are teaching kids who are away from home and quite rightly bring their troubles with them. One of the most rewarding experiences for me was managing to simply just have a rally with a boy who had five minutes previously been crying in the corner of the tennis court because he was upset and homesick. This is when I realised that youre not only there as a teacher but also as a best friend, sister and a mother- theres nothing more rewarding than that.

I started playing tennis from a young age and since then have played at my local tennis club in friendly tournaments and for my University team. So if you were like me and are sitting on the fence about applying for Summer Camp USA, I would just go for it. No tennis qualifications are needed, just a passion and knowledge to teach another person your skills- trust me, you wont realise what you can do and are capable of until youve experienced Summer Camp. Like I was told in the orientation before I left to America- Its the hardest job, you will ever love. This is certainly true and an experience youll remember for the rest of your life.

To start your own all-American summer on Summer Camp USA, check out the list of in-demand ‘Hot Activities’ and other activities you could teach. EARLY APPLICATION IS ESSENTIAL and raises your chances of being placed.

Dress Codes For The Best Comfort While Playing Tennis

Tennis is the real test of stamina, agility and speed. The sport is one among the most favorite sports of people all around the globe. While it is a profession for some, for regulars it is passion, leisure, entertainment or a way to stay fit. According to worldwide surveys, tennis players are vigorous and show presence of a strong immune system as compared to those who are not so fond of the sport. Also since it burns much more calories as compared to aerobics, cycling and swimming and thus it is in recent trend among fitness freaks.

The apparel of tennis is far more alluring and stylish as compared to other sports. Perfect tennis apparel is a must since it reflects the players physical attitude towards the game and maintains his style. Ideal clothing also has a huge impact on the overall score. An ideal womens tennis clothing should be most importantly comfortable. It should not be a barrier for the player, as speed is a very important factor in tennis and theres no time for adjustments in apparel or any other accessory for the player.

There arent many restrictions regarding clothing in tennis, however a candid womens tennis clothing should follow general tennis rules. Some examples of prohibited clothing in tennis include jeans, football shorts, etc. Other prohibitions depend on the consent of the match referee and also on the weather conditions of the match venue.

Womens tennis clothing includes tank tops and shorts which are comfortable as well as fashion conscious. Womens clothing has evolved from heavy cotton fabrics to light and cozier womens tennis shorts. Some of the biggest sport brands are well established today on account of the benefits from massive sales of womens tennis clothing.

Womens tennis shorts are labeled more comfortable by experienced players. As the number of women players increased, their tennis apparel got upgraded to modern womens tennis shorts for extended periods of playing time. Womens tennis skirts are rather more appealing than apparels of other sports and this adds to one of the attributes of the sport being hot favorite among the youth.

Other shorts with leggings attached are called skorts. They are also in recent trends and preferred during winters or at cold countries by many tennis players. It should be noted that for each and every game there are dress codes that matches the comfort level of the players. Follow them to get the best relief while playing.

The Laws Of Tennis Psychology

Tennis psychology is far more than the effect of certain shots, made or missed, on the player. One can sum up such things by saying that every kill gives confidence, every error tends to destroy it. These things are obvious. The branch of psychology that is interesting is the reaction on the various players of different courts, different crowds, and other players.

I could go on writing tennis psychology as explained by external conditions for hundreds of pages, but all I want to do is to bring to mind a definite idea of the value of the mind in the game. Stimulate it how you will, a successful tennis player must admit the value of quick mind. Do it by a desire for personal glory, or team success, or by a love of competition in matching your wits against the other man’s, but do it some way.

Do, not think that tennis is merely a physical exercise. It is a mental cocktail of a very high “kick.”
